Holidaying in New England in August/September

Category holidays

So, following ILUG 2008 (and 6 months of silence on the blog from me :-0) the Warren & I are finding time to plan our holiday, and we wanted to pick y'all's brains on the subject.

Before I start, let me reassure you that:
a) yes we know it is Labor Day weekend in the middle of our holiday and yes we plan to avoid Cape Cod as a result and
b) yes we know we are 6 weeks too early to see the fabulous fall colours.
Our dates are set by Warren speaking at Collaboration University starting on 8th September and that is just the way the cookie crumbles.

Outline plan so far:
Fly to Boston Wednesday 27th August & stay in Boston until Saturday 30th August or thereabouts.
Me to fly home from Boston and Warren to fly to Chicago on Saturday 6th September.

So we have a week to explore other parts of New England and we would love your suggestions on things we should do and equally important, things we should avoid. We are totally happy to hire a car and drive around - we are thinking of finding somewhere convenient to stay in, say, Vermont and heading off on day trips to see places / things etc.

Looking through our USA guidebook this morning, I was stoked to discover that the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory is in Vermont and does tours! A definite must for me to see.

We would love to hear your suggestions, whether you live there or have visited before, please drop me a comment and thanks in advance.

Gravatar Image1 - In Boston, you may enjoy the Science Museum, Quincy Market and the Aquarium. I went to college in Waltham just outside Boston and those were my favorite places besides Fenway Park. You may find Harvard Square fun and it's easy to get to on the subway. They call it the "T". I would recommend using the "T" to get around because driving is tough in Boston. If it were me, I would go up to Maine and find a nice place near the ocean. It's cold water but it's beautiful. One of the first towns in Maine is York and it's nice. Very quiet and peaceful. You got to taste the world famous lobster. Ben and Jerry's sounds fun. Bed and Breakfast and quiet is all you find in northern New England in the summer. If you like hiking, the White Mountains in New Hampshire is nice.
Enjoy my backyard!
