Questions for Kitty from Libby. If you don't know what it is all about go see here. Libby, apologies for the long wait for these to appear.
Okay... interview questions... Let's see...

1. What's your happiest memory from your childhood? Something that you pull out to make yourself smile when you need a grin?

In 1989, during the last 6 months of my Father’s life, we (my Mother, Father, Brother and me) went to live with my Uncle and his family: to give my Mother some respite and my Brother and I some playmates of our own age who we could muck around with and thus take our minds off Daddy’s illness – a great ploy that has left me with many very happy memories. My Uncle was, at the time, another of the ‘castle-owning relatives’ which meant that there was plenty of space for us all to fit in and not be in each other’s way.

That year just happened to be the quinquennial opening of the Castle Garden to the public, so we all got busy thinking up what stalls to have and what other things we could do with in the grounds for our paying guests to enjoy.

P squirreled around in the larder/pantry and found loads of things for the tombola; some of which were extremely well past their sell-by dates. I think our best effort was some RT White’s lemonade with a best before date of 1978!

C sorted out the ‘how many sweets in the jar’ game. We all headed into the local sweetshop and bought up masses of individually wrapped sweets and begged a finished jar they had off them to complete the effect. If I remember rightly P took far too clinical and rational an approach to this game, by studying the jar from several angles, counting the numbers of sweets he could see on each side and doing some very careful arithmetic – I think he got it nearly spot on, though we did deny him his prize and gave it to next best (paying guest) guess ;)

One of my favourites was the ‘crazy croquet’. The main lawn is sunk below the main terrace and there is a smallish grassed bank which leads down from one to the other. Being croquet fans the kit was got out and a sort of ‘trick shot’ was set up. Tricky to describe in all honesty, but essentially you had to put the ball though the hoop as you would in a normal game. However, the hoop and the starting point were not on the same level, nor were they in a straight line with one another – tricky to manage, but (and we checked this) definitely achievable, we didn’t want to deliberately rip-off our nice paying guests after all ;) Sadly no-one did achieve it on the day, but loads of people had a great time trying and it was one of our best earners.

There was also a ‘drop a coin into the bucket of water and completely cover the coin already on the bottom of the bucket’ along with the inevitable raffle, plant stall and I think a cakes and biscuits stall too.

Me and I had the best ploy though, I think anyway. We took the ride-on mower and headed off into the more wild parts of the garden away from the maniured lawns and we set about creating a 'woodland walk'. This was some of the best fun I have ever had. The way through the woods was densly packed with willow herb, brambles and the like, but mostly willow herb. So, being 13 or so, we reckoned the best way to tackle this was to race the mower towards the 6-foot high willow herb barrier and just go until the machine stalled. We did this for what felt like ages, but was probably only a couple of days. Some of my most favourtie memories - I can still remember the feeling of exhilaration as we cleared a path through the trees and the excitement of revving the engine and taking a long run up to smash into the willow herb and beat it into submission! (Hum, wonder if there was a sort of therapy in there, that I have never considered before, probably.) Anyway our woodland walk was a huge success with loads of visitors happily trotting t hrough our tamed wood.

The great day dawned and it was beautiful and sunny - a true British summer's day - and everyone came out to play. We had so many visitors and it was a truly brilliant day.

The most amazing and powerful memory of the day, for me, was seeing my Father walking through the big cast-iron gates at the end of the lawn and looking happy and smiley - almost as if he wasn't ill at all - he beamed with pride at what we had done and even took part in all our games and stalls. It is one of the happiest and clearest memories I have of him and I will be forever grateful for that.

2. Which movies would you stick in your bag if you were planning for a long girlie weekend of movies, wine, and chocolate?

Enchanted April, Love Actually, Keeping the Faith, Princess Bride, & Kate and Leopold. However, I am an action movic chick at heart so I would have to take some beat 'em up stuff too: Die Hard triology, Tomb Raider and probably The Mummy & Mummy Returns.

3. If someone were planning a perfect "treat" day for you, what would it include?

A trip to the British Museum in London. It is one of my favourite places, the Great Hall is so serene and calm, even with a couple of hundred people milling around it.

Then, a short hop back to Edinburgh and a massage with the great guy down the road, hot stones included. Finally, a trip to the Scotsman Hotel for a Kir Royale (champange poured over a shot of creme de cassis), a meal in the restaurant followed by a screening of a favourite movie (hundreds to chose from) in their private cinema.

4. What's something you think you ought to regret or be embarrassed by, but you don't, and you aren't?

Uumm, wrong audience on here! Libby, I'll tell you in Dublin.

5. Tell me one thing about yourself that you're extremely proud of but would never tell anyone unless pressed.

Well, some of you already know this, but there are a load who don't and it is precisely because I don't tend to tell people. My family are in the upper echelons of British society. Now I don't mean that they are stinking rich or that we all have titles or anything, but we are 'Landed Gentry'. I went to a private 'Prep' School from 5 till 11 and thence onwards to a private 'Public' School from 11 -18. I went to St Mary's, Ascot, one of the smartest all-girls boarding schools in the country. I rubbed shoulders with the heirs to some major extablishments and the odd bit of foreign royalty: The JCB empire, the Fortes and buckets that I can't remember of never knew about. Our family historian, Uncle H, has painstakingly traced our family back to c.1300AD, and if you want more details on any of those generations, the family archives are deposited in 303 bundles in H.M. General Register house in Edinburgh (Historical Search Room) under the number GD 121/3.

Well that should keep you quiet for a bit
